The Green Woman is joining the strike for the climate this Friday 20thSeptember and will be CLOSED FOR BUSINESS. We are offering our staff a paid day to attend a demonstration and get involved with climate change campaigning.
What's happening?
Since last year school children have been striking to demand action on climate change, now they are asking the adults to take responsibility. The UK Student Climate Network have called for a general strike beginning on the 20th of September to demand action from our government and corporations on climate change. People from every industry across the country will be striking together. You can find a protest to attend near you here: https://ukscn.org/events/
What can you do?
You can book the day off work to join a strike, attend for part of the day, get together with other concerned citizens, and spread the word on social media.
If you are an employer you can let your employees know that you support them taking part in the strike. You can also do more to show your support by giving them a half or full paid day to attend. You can contact your customers and suppliers, as we are, and let them know that you support the strike and hope they will too. The restricted law does not allow workers to strike about anything other than their working conditions, so it is very important for businesses to let their employees know that they will not be penalised for joining the global strike for the climate.
You can sign up for more information with Global Climate Strike https://globalclimatestrike.net/#join or the UKSCN https://ukscn.org/take-action/. You can also search Global Climate Strike on social media to find an event near you.
Why choose a strike?
There are many ways to work on protecting the environment but a general strike is one of the most powerful political tools citizens have to show their strength of feeling to their government and their employers. The disruption a strike causes is necessary and effective in showing that you can not allow things to continue as they are and action must be taken. If you are going to strike it is really important that you are seen to do so, that is where the strike becomes most powerful – sign up with the strikes online and attend one of the demonstrations. If you are unable to get to a demonstration, get together with other people who care about climate change and take pictures of your group with a banner for social media. See what contacts you can make and what ideas you can form together for what else you can do in future.
For our future. See you in the streets.
